FACTS ABOUT SEXUAL ASSAULT OF ADULTS
The statistics:
- A sexual assault occurs every 45 seconds in the U.S.
- Only 22% of sexual assault victims are assaulted by some they have never seen before or do not know well.
- It is estimated that fewer than 50% of sexual assaults are reported.
- 84% of all sexual assaults are committed by an acquaintance of the victim.
- 57% of all sexual assaults occur during a date.
- 26% of all sexual assaults are committed by an intimate partner.
- 10% of all sexual assaults happen to males.
- 1 in 7 women will be sexually assaulted by her husband.
- Women who were sexually assaulted as adolescents are three times more likely to be victimized by a husband.
- Sexual assault is reported by 33% to 46% of women who are being physically assaulted by their husbands.
- 14% of married women report that their husbands have used physical force or threat to try to have sex with them.
- 22% of women polled report they have been forced to do sexual things against their will, usually by an intimate partner.
